Fluorescence makes way for LED!

New light from Brussels

Phasing out and directives

The European Union's RoHS Directive *1 restricts the use of certain harmful substances in electrical and electronic equipment, such as the use of mercury in lighting products. The old directive contained exemptions for a range of products that have now been revised by the European Commission - with major implications for fluorescent lighting products.
In addition, SLR *2 (the Ecodesign Directive, in effect since September 2021) also phases out products that do not meet the efficiency guidelines. Together, these guidelines help protect the environment and human health by mandating climate-friendly and sustainable lighting.
In addition to energy efficiency, the SLR imposes other functional requirements. For example, the standby power of ballasts. Or TLA: Temporal Light Artefacts, such as the Pst (measurement quantity for flicker) and SVM (measurement quantity for stroboscopy) of light sources.

Suppliers of products

Manufacturers, importers etc. of the products concerned will themselves indicate which products will disappear from their portfolio as a result of this regulation and which alternatives will take their place. In addition, the Single Lighting Regulation requires manufacturers, importers, etc. of the relevant products to provide information about the replaceability or non-replaceability of light sources and ballasts. They must also indicate whether replacement must be carried out by qualified persons, or whether end users may carry out replacement themselves.
