Zucchini busbar trunking as a sustainable energy distribution system
Busbar trunking systems have been on the market for some time now. Only, these systems are still relatively little used, while there are many advantages over conventional solutions with cables and cable support systems.
Busbar trunking systems are modular and are mainly manufactured in standard dimensions, in addition to these standard elements and directional changes, fittings with lengths up to 3000mm can be produced. On a project, these elements are connected according to a predetermined route.
Advantages of busbars over cables are:
- Faster installation, the ratio of labor to material is 25 - 75%, in contrast ( 70% - 30%) with cables.
- Cost advantage due to the use of aluminum conductors
- Space saving
- Halogen-free, constitutes a lower fire load due to minimal use of flammable materials
- Lower voltage drop
- Lower outgoing magnetic field
- Circular, remountable and reusable
In addition to these advantages, there are also benefits that are somewhat less obvious at first glance. When using a busbar trunking, the installation becomes more manageable. Cables are led from a main distributor grouped in cable ducts through the building. This often requires wide cable ladders or cable ducts with wide bends. With a busbar trunking, the corners are standard 90 degrees.
Branch boxes are installed at strategic locations, from which a short cable goes to a sub-distribution unit or a large consumer.
In conventional installations, high currents require parallel cables with large cross-sections that are professionally laid so that they can withstand the electrodynamic forces that can cause a short circuit. The composition and construction of the elements of a busbar trunking system ensure that these forces are withstood, without additional measures.
A busbar trunking system is very flexible and durable for an end user because when an adjustment is made in the installation, an additional branch box can be placed or an existing branch box can be moved without having to de-energize the busbar trunking system.
This makes busbar trunking extremely suitable for applications the industrial infrastructure and machine building.

Van Meer - Quick Connection for Energy StorageRead moreDrive specialist Van Meer developed an energy storage system for heavy-duty drives and designed a custom battery system for it. For the connectors in the battery system’s cabinet, their regular supplier itsme recommended omni-brand partner Phoenix Contact. Excellent connectors — only the frame didn’t fit. Phoenix Contact quickly developed a customer-specific connector design. itsme now supplies Van Meer with complete connector sets, including the custom plug.

Avebe - A Good Night’s Sleep Thanks to FactoryScanRead moreCompanies often have no clear idea of the installed base of industrial automation in their factories and warehouses. With FactoryScan, itsme can provide an overview of the current status of automation components such as PLCs. Potato processor Royal Avebe uses the results to update their component stock and assess future availability. The scan is intended to reduce the number of hardware-related disruptions Process Control Engineer Johan Wierenga has to deal with. It also helps him sleep better, knowing the stock is up to date.
